学園長挨拶

子どもの無邪気な笑顔や素直さはかけがえのない財産です。

私は、オーストラリアに住む、日本のバックグラウンドを持つ子どもたちが、自分に自信を持ち、たくましく自分の未来を切り開いていく人に育つお手伝いをしたいと思っています。日本語と日本文化を理解し、日本とオーストラリアだけでなく、世界の中の自分を意識して、希望を持って生きる人として育ってくれたら、本当にうれしいです。

ビクトリア学園は、子どもたちとかかわることが楽しくて仕方がない大人たちが集まって作った学校です。理事全員が、長い間、継承語日本語教育に携わり、子どもたちの日本語習得にとって大切なことやむずかしいことを経験してきました。私たちが教育者、保護者として培ってきた力をビクトリア学園で発揮したいと思っています。

しかしながら、週一回の半日授業では言語習得の効果に限界があります。ご家庭での言語環境がお子さまの言語習得において大きな比重を占めていると言えます。ビクトリア学園では、保護者がご家庭でどのようにお子さまの日本語習得をサポートしていくとよいか、保護者の皆様とともに考えていきたいと思っています。

Greeting Letter from the Vice President　

Welcome to Victorian School of Japanese (VSJ)/Victoria Gakuen!　　　

Hi, I’m Tony Preston, Vice President of the Management Committee, and a Japanese > English translator. I lived in Japan for a total of about 13 years.

Both my children went to Japanese Saturday school in Melbourne from first-year kinder to year 9, eleven years each, going on to complete VCE Japanese Second Language at their local government school. Now 5-6 years after they finished high school, and 8-9 years after they graduated from Japanese Saturday school, they still maintain regular contact with their friends from Japanese school, and with friends from high school who share a mutual interest in Japan.

So why make the effort of bringing your child to Victoria Gakuen on Sundays, you might be asking yourself? Although I can’t make any promises, your child might just make friends for life. They will learn to speak, read and write Japanese. They will learn to appreciate differences between at least two different countries, cultures, languages and ways of thinking, which we hope will give them a greater appreciation and perspective of even more diversity, and also similarities, between different cultures. It should make your children better equipped as global citizens.

For now, let’s put aside the research that showed bilingual children (let alone those people who speak at least four or more languages) did better than monolinguals in both verbal and non-verbal intelligence tests, have a superior ability to concentrate, solve problems and focus, better mental flexibility and multitasking skills. (Of more interest to me is evidence that bilinguals showed symptoms of Alzheimers an average of five years after monolinguals with the same disease pathology. And a recent study found that cognitive recovery was twice as likely for bilinguals as monolinguals for stroke survivors. There’s hope for me yet.)

To be blunt, it requires long-term commitment to achieve real competence in Japanese, but it will open up another world, and hopefully at least double your child’s enjoyment of Japanese food, travel, movies, music, television, humor, sports, anime and manga, to mention but a few aspects.

So can we look forward to sharing the journey with you at Victoria Gakuen at Aberfeldie Primary School in Essendon, Victoria?

Message from Mr. Gage, Principal of Aberfeldie Primary School　

Hello and welcome. My name is Nathan Gage, and I am the 21^st principal of Aberfeldie Primary School. Our school was established in 1925 and sits on a huge parcel of land in Aberfeldie, not far from the banks of the Maribyrnong River. We have a strong and connected community, with many families being second, third and even fourth generation Aberfeldie students. Our students love learning Japanese here at school and we are honoured to become the new home of the Victorian School of Japanese. The first Japanese language school in Western Melbourne. We are looking forward to welcoming you all into our beautiful school and developing a wonderful partnership together into the future.

教育目標

ビクトリア学園は、子どもたちが日本の文化と言葉に対する理解を深め、意欲を持って日本語習得に取り組むようになることを目指します。子どもたちが日本語学習を通して自分のアイデンティティーを自覚し、自分とまわりを尊重し、世界的視野を持つ若者にそだってくれるよう、カリキュラムを精選します。　

「分かった時の楽しさ」や「相手に伝わった時の喜び」が体験できるように、学んだことを実際に使ってみる体験学習の機会もカリキュラムに組み入れていきます。そうした体験学習を通して、子どもたちは相手や仲間の頑張りを認め、同時に自分の成長も認めるようになっていくことを期待しています。

ビクトリア学園は、保護者の皆様とともに子どもたちの日本語習得をサポートしていくことを目指します。日本から離れた地で子育てをしていると、日本語習得に関するアドバイスをもらえるような場所がなく、親として悩まれることも多いかもしれません。保護者の皆様とともに、子どもたちの日本語習得のために何ができるか、いっしょに考えていきます。

 

教育の柱

ビクトリア学園は「う・ま・み」のある学校です。

う：うけつぐ　（日本語と日本文化を受け継ぎ、次に伝えていく力をつける）

ま：まなぶ　　（興味を持って、言葉と文化を学ぶ）

み：みとめる　（自分と自分のまわりを観察し、認め、尊重する）

カリキュラムの内容は「う・ま・み」活動を軸に構成されます。

学年相応の教科書学習を基本にビクトリア学園の独自教材を補足していきます。小学校低学年は日本語の大事な基本が教科書に満載されているので、教科書学習が中心となります。学年が上がるごとに独自教材の比重が増えていきます。学年の到達目標を達成できるように学習内容を厳選します。

体験学習として、次のようなものを計画しています。

• 季節の行事（こどもの日、七夕など）
• 学校行事（入学式、運動会、学習発表会）    
• 他校との交流（日本、オーストラリア）
